Along Oura River

Along Oura River

This is the settlement on the right bank of the Oura River around 1897. There’s a long row of large wooden western buildings. Rickshaws awaiting customers are lined up along the street with gas lights by the stone harbour walls. Small cargo vessels called sanpan that carry cargo to and from ships anchored off-shore are moored closely together. The pink western style building on the hill in the back is the Steele Memorial Academy. The building has been relocated to Glover Garden.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ogawa Kazumasa, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number58‐18‐0]

This photo was taken from the slope beneath Glover Garden. The right center building is the Belle Vue Hotel, which had stood there since the Bakumatsu period. The porch at the entrance had been added later. The Oura settlement is crowded with western style buildings, trees stood in the middle of the coastal street, and a new one-story building has been built in front of the Custom House at the end of the street. Around 1874~1875.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number58‐9‐0]

Thomas Glover and Friends at Glover Garden

Thomas Glover and Friends at Glover Garden

Since the English title is “View of the Battery on the Glover's Bungalow,” it is clear that there was a battery at Glover House. Thomas Glover is sitting on the stone on the left. It appears that Beato carefully instructed each person as to where they should be and the composition of the photo, the poses, and timing are well orchestrated. The atmosphere of the end of the Edo era where the weapons had a say can be felt from the photo.==Date:1864, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:F. Viewing Oura Foreign Settlement from Japanese Garden next to Chief Officer’s Residence at Dejima

Viewing Oura Foreign Settlement from Japanese Garden next to Chief Officer’s Residence at Dejima

This is one of the oldest scenic photographs of Nagasaki. It was taken by Milton Miller, who came to Nagasaki in 1862, not long after the opening of Japan's doors in 1859. Miller seems to have visited the residence of the chief factor at the Dejima Dutch Factory. Taken from the garden beside the residence, the photograph provides a distant view of the foreign settlement where the 2nd phase of land reclamation work had reached completion and houses were being built. The column on the left is a flag pole to raise the Dutch national flag. The roof of Myogyoji Temple (temporary British Consulate at the time) is visible. The Glover house has not been built yet. This photograph is also contained in the Bauduin Collection donated to Leiden University.==Date:1861-62?, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number113‐8‐0]

Oura waterfront street

Oura waterfront street

This is the Minamiyamate and Naminohira area taken from Oura Bund around the1890s. Although the rickshaw path on the side had already been paved with stones for rainy day usage, the main street hadn’t been paved yet in this picture. There are stone embankments, pine trees along the street and electric poles, which clearly show the lay of streets and land. Naminohira Shipyard on the right and Glover Garden on the hillside are visible.==Date:Middle Meiji (1883-1897), Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)
